Pokémon Go, the augmented reality (AR) mobile game that changed the way people explored the world and “caught Pokémon”, will be turning 5 years old this week.
Since its launch back in 2016, the game has generated over $5 billion in sales, and continues to rise each day.
Pokémon Go continues to grow each year
This data was shared in a new report by app statistics company, Sensor Tower, who also highlighted that Pokémon Go still continues to grow to this day.
In the report, Pokémon Go made 34% more money in the first half of 2021 as compared to 2020 — totalling to $642 million on both iOS and Android.
2020 was also Pokémon Go’s most profitable year, partly due to the global pandemic.

The Pokémon franchise is worth $100 billion
To date, Pokémon Go has been downloaded by over 630 million people, where over 115.5 million people come from the United States.
While $5 billion in sales is a huge amount for the mobile game, it still represents only 5% of the game’s total franchise, which stands at $100 billion since debuting in 1996.
